Chioma Ebinama
Thirteen Masks, 2018

Interested in Nigerian pre colonial crafts and traditions, Ebinama teamed up with fashion designer Bubu Ogisi and her Lagos-born label IAMISIGO to create this series.

The two artists sought to explore concepts tied to the masquerade, and its rapid decline in today’s hyper-consumptive and globalized society. While the masks play with traditional weaving techniques, they also move towards the contemporary fashion language of IAMISIGO. The project openly mourns empathy, community, compassion, and ecological responsibility.

Thirteen Masks was made with the support of the 16by16 artist residency in Lagos, Nigeria, and presented during ArtXLagos and 2018 Lagos Fashion Week.
