Robles de Medina’s works come out of a research-based practice. He investigates history – especially related to Surinam, race and queer culture – to better reflect on his own present and identity. Magic Mountain is the compiling of two images, one from the overtly racist 1946 Disney film Song of the South, and the other of a YouTube video of Tiger Woods’s arrest for drunk driving. Animation, cultural creation and American race politics are layers approached through this work.
In the smaller work, Figure of Collective Dream, Robles de Medina addresses surveillance and so expands into the relationship between authority and those who are paid to protect us; once again gaining access through footage found on-line.
