Capucine Gros
Approximately 199, annual since 2012

Started 2012

Approximately 199
Performance, books, 200-print installation, and tee-shirts

A multi-layered project, Approximately 199 is Capucine Gros’s meditation on the globe’s countries and their populations.

THE PERFORMANCE
Approximately 199, Mar. 20, 2017 to Oct. 5, 2017, performance with screen-printed shirts, 200 days. Gros dedicated her outerwear to one country each day, moving from smallest to largest population.

THE BOOKS
Gros makes one book each year, dedicating one page per country in the world – including its shape and population size; plus one page for the approx. 10 million stateless humans. Gros intends to continue this project for the remainder of her life.

THE PRINTS
Each variation of this installation includes one print of a page from one year’s book. The sale of each piece in the installation creates data: Which countries are bought? Why does a person choose to own a particular nation? Which countries remained unwanted? As the project travels, how will place and time affect these answers?

THE TEE SHIRTS
A tee shirt may be bought by choosing a size and color. When it arrives, the person receiving it will find out which country they received. Because nobody chooses where they are born.
